Our History

The Legacy of Add-Ran to Texas Christian University:

From its founding to River View Ranch Resort.

Add-Ran Male & Female College was one of the first co-ed institutions west of the Mississippi. They opened their doors with just 13 students, in 1873. Located in the small community of Thorp Spring, Texas. The College was established by the Clark family, who played a pivotal role in keeping the institution running for over 3 decades. During this time, the college offered a range of educational programs and was an important center of learning in the region.

In 1895, the College relocated to Waco, Tx, and was renamed Add-Ran Christian University. Then in 1902, the institution officially adopted the name Texas Christian University (TCU). Unfortunately, the Waco campus was destroyed by fire in 1910, leading TCU to move to its current home in Fort Worth, Texas.

Addison and Randolph Clarks dream of a college, where character and education go hand in hand, continues to shape the future of generations at TCU, that began on the open prairie in Thorp Spring, Texas.

Today, the legacy of Add-Ran college lives on through River View Ranch Resort, which now occupies the property once home to the College. The Resort not only offers a scenic and tranquil environment but also embraces the rich history of the education and community that defined the college. Visitors to River View Ranch Resort can still feel a connection to the past making it a unique blend of history and modern hospitality.
